Aiming for yaku
Speed first
A closed hand gets riichi anyway, so the first goal is a fast tenpai. Bend the hand toward a bigger yaku only when it costs little: a tie in tiles, or one slightly weaker shape. Never take a step back from one tile away to chase one.
You drew : six blocks. Which block goes?
Five pairs: seven pairs
With five pairs, seven pairs is often the fastest route: two more pairs and you are done, and its single wait can be any tile you like. Keep the pairs, cut the loose tiles.
You drew , and hold five pairs. Which discard keeps you closest to winning?
A flush is worth it when it lifts the value
A half flush adds 3 han closed, 2 open, but it is slow and shows in your discards. Go for it when it turns a cheap hand into a mangan, not when it would be your only yaku or the hand is big already.
When is chasing a half flush worth the lost speed?
